AI - i recently saw a tweet about an AI tool. The tool is one that “expands” images, it guesses at what might be outside the frame to create larger images. It went viral for butchering a couple different album covers. And I think that this as a tool and the way that it was marketed really get at the thing that tech bros & AI fans who have experienced years of media conglomerate monopoly do not understand. Art is about cropping, deletion, the things left unsaid and to the imagination. I saw a TikTok recently where someone described finally understanding the concept an old band director had said “play the rests”. That when you have a composition, when you play the song, the rests are not simply dead space, but rather, they are just a space with a different kind of activation. Silence is not nothing, silence is just a different something. They have spent 20 years with Disney and marvel and Star Wars giving them back story and fleshing out every single character and detail. These media companies are milking a dead cow, and the blood pulled from those stone teets is not art. It’s anthropology, sociology of a made up world. Art is made with the crop. the crop is the definitive action of an artist, choosing what the viewer can and can not see. And these sycophants have such a need to milk the stone that they can not understand that.
